john4jack from Corvallis, United StatesSuperb selective focus; it really directs our attention. 23 Jan 2009 6:42am @GJC: Lol...no but I don't think they were too strict. This yard is used by serious railroad enthusiasts. They are individual private owners who restore train cars, for their own private use...it is not their profession but rather it is hobby they are very passionate about. It is like taking model railroading to the extreme level. One guy lives there in his restored car...It is a very large car complete with all the amenities including a modern office. I have not seen the interior or met the man but I have talked to other owners who know him well. It is a very interesting group of people from various walks of life that share this passion. I had no idea! That is just amazing. I assume this is a hobby of some rather wealthy people? Can they take their cars to other places by train (like mobile home)? Really interesting phenomenon! 24 Jan 2009 12:36am @GJC: I think it is a pretty diverse group of people. Some wealthy but not all. They often buy the cars in pretty bad shape and put a lot of time and sweat into working on them and restoring them which can take years. Yes some do transport the cars to different places from time to time. They "loan" them to different recreational rail lines for show and tourist rides etc. as well. Some people have Cabooses that they keep in this yard and use them like weekend campers with their families...it is really fun for their kids. Sleeping in a caboose using a little pot belly stove for heat...really cool. They even decorate them for the holidays. I think they pay some sort of storage fee to the yard to keep the train there. It is also home base for the Black River and Western Railroad which you can read more about here. and here.
