Finding Comfort

Posted by Laurie (New Jersey, United States) on 2 November 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

We all seek comfort and security especially in these difficult times. Sometimes we find it in the simplest of things.

I found this little nest of seeds sitting on a rock at a park last Fall. I somehow lost track of this photo so once I stumbled across it I decided to post it.

I wanted to make a couple of notes on the previous shot of my Aunt's old Farmhouse. I've heard that the house is supposed to be rehabilitated for use by the park ranger. When I was there last there were some signs of work being done. An old screen house that covered an outdoor garden room had recently been torn down. The old wooden gutters were removed and placed on the flagstone side porch and the ground was graded and freshly seeded. It appeared that the septic system had been replaced. The old built in swimming pool had been removed and filled in and the polliwog garden pond had also been removed and filled in. That part was kind of sad since I had fond memories of catching polliwogs in it. There was a beautiful half sunken garden around it and it was built into the side of the hill the house was built on. My mom told me that the pool and the polliwog pond each served 2 purposes the most important of which was so that there was a large source of water nearby in case of a fire. I don't know if that was true but it made sense.

I will be interested to see what happens over the next few months...oh one interesting thing I saw was a Satellite TV Dish on the side lawn of the house that had not been there before. There is an old Office/Barn/Garage directly adjacent to the house that has an apartment above it that was used by the farmhand. It may well have been occupied which would explain the Satellite Dish. I did not go too close to the apartment to see if there was anyone living there. That part of the property is technically off limits to the public so I didn't want to draw attention to our presence there.

In other news, I got myself a Nikon D700 FX (full frame) DSLR camera a little over a week ago but because I had a large assignment that I was working on I really didn't have any time to get out and use it. The job is finished and on it's way to the client so I will finally have time to shoot with it, hopefully today. So the next shots I post will (hopefully) be from the new camera. I am so excited!
