High Rises Etc.

Another in the Jersey City series. This one shows that the city is pretty typical of what you would expect to find in terms of the tall buildings and wide main thoroughfares. The streets also are very clean. From my observations it is a tidy city.

This was taken around 6 PM on a beautiful summer Saturday so the streets of the city were pretty empty.

@MaryB: Thanks. There were not many people in the downtown or waterfront area that day but there was a huge outdoor concert at Liberty Park which is not far from there. We couldn't even get close to the park so I think that was where a lot of people were.

this is beautifully done Laurie! i find city-scapes very hard to pull off due to how 'busy' they can get -- make me distracted and unable to focus on a tight composition -- you did this brilliantly! and what light and sky! :)

@dj.tigersprout: Thanks. I have the same issues with doing city shots. I don't know if it was easier because the streets were so quiet. I was determined to get some that worked since it is not my norm to do them.

Great colors & composition gives this image a surreal effect. Was there any post processing?

@Jeffster: Thanks. I generally don't do much in the way of post processing for most of my images. I convert the RAW file in Lightroom and do some basic curves adjustments and color balancing either in Lightroom and or CS2. If I want to do multiple curves adjustments I will do that in CS2 and use layer masks to control the results. I almost always apply mild sharpening in the lab color lightness channel when I re-size the image for posting to the web. Other than that no other post processing was done.

@Illuci: Thanks. Essex is quite a common name, in my state at least. Jersey City is in Hudson County and the next county over is actually called Essex County. It is between Union and Hudson Counties. My town is in Union County.

Whew! I think you should offer this (for a fat payment, of course) to the Jersey City tourism board. Fantastic shot! It's strange to see so few peole around at that time of day, though - don't they know what they're missing?

I have to say there was a huge outdoor concert that day in Liberty State Park which is in Jersey City not far from the downtown area so I think it's possible that a lot of people were there or perhaps they fled the city for the shore or mountains since it was such a gorgeous weekend.
