Gone for the Winter

I don't know what plant this is from, perhaps you horticulture experts could enlighten me. I found this in my son's bassoon teacher's driveway some months ago and though it would make an interesting subject. It took me a while to get around to shooting it, but I finally set it up in front of a black background and shot it with the snoot on my SB-800 off camera and aimed at it from above and slightly in front.
