This is another one from the archives. I shot this last August.
I've been going out to shoot but have been totally uninspired lately. I know it won't last forever, but it is none the less frustrating.
I am not a fan of the kind of winter weather we've been having. Everything is flat, gray, and boring not to mention cold here right now. At least if it's going to be really cold and gray like it's been, please let it snow! Not a blizzard but something to make it interesting. We've had practically no snow even though every week they call for a storm or two. The storms fizzle or miss us altogether, but the cold, gray, flat, light stays and stays. I'm bored now.
To find something that I am interested in shooting or that I haven't already shot has not worked out at all lately. I have to drive too far to get out of my boring suburbia and I am just not finding the time to do that right now. When I do have the time to go looking, the light is at it's worst. So for the time being...sigh...I guess I'll try to find some more indoor stuff...boring! Or continue to search the archives...also boring.
Maybe this afternoon (Sunday as I write this) will bring some new inspiration. Earlier it looked like the light might be better later this afternoon. Although now, as I type this I can tell by the light coming through the window over my shoulder that the gray overcast is returning. Looking out the window, I see that it is back. I just checked the weather and it doesn't look good. Oh well...We'll see...Maybe tomorrow?

Well! If this came out of the archives it was certainly worth the search! Those gossamer wings are caught brilliantly, and the blue and green is absolutely lovely :-)

@Anne: Thanks.
Lovely capture. It is nice to see bright colors in the midst of this grey weather.

@Anita: Thanks.
Really great shot.

@Craig Persel: Thanks.
Great macro shot.

@Oswegan: Thanks.
I know what you mean - the gray makes it hard to get up the energy to get outside. But you may be suprised if you head out - my daughter and I got up the energy to try it and ran across some pretty good pictures even though the lighting was not ideal. The other thing I have noticed is the great evening light coming in the house - it makes for some interesting pictures of "boring" objects.
Very nice picture from the archives - the colors are fabulous.

@Chris: Thanks. I see the wonderful light in the early part of the day and in the evenings, but when it is available it always seems that I am not...but the days are getting longer!
Hi Laurie! I hear you -- before yesterday, I had not picked my camera up in 3 weeks - always an excuse.. too gray, too cold (man it's just bitter!) too boring looking. Anyway, some photo friends and I trekked up to Jim Thorpe and shot the town, the Lehigh Gorge, and all points in and around. It was fabulous - and it got the juices flowing again! Take a trip, drive around and get lost, there is still good stuff to shoot in January I've learned :)
ps. This is a great shot - beautiful capture!

@Betsy Barron : www.thebetsy.com: Thanks. I usually go for a drive and "get lost" for a few hours about once a week whenever possible although the last few weekends have been a little too busy.
I actually drove all over on Saturday for about 8 hours or so. I drove down to Princeton, then over to Washington's Crossing, then to Millford and Rieglesville on the PA side before heading back toward home. But the light was terribly disappointing the whole time I was out.
I saw lots of things that could have been good shots if the light had been good but I got nothing from the light that was available when I was out. On the up side, we found a neat little English Brewery/Pub in Millford called the Ship Inn. We had a nice very late lunch/early supper there and we met a couple of locals during our travels that provided us with a little recent history and some leads to some interesting off the beaten path places to explore. So while I came home pretty much empty handed in the photo department it was a nice day out and I have found some places to go back to in the future.
Today was very nice but I had a job I to get started on so I didn't get out at all. Jon gets out of school early all this week because of mid-terms so I can't venture too far since I have to pick him up early. Of course that means it will be great weather all week until mid-terms are finished!
Beautiful, Laurie!! Glad you dug it up out of your archives!! I don't know what's worse, the gray skies or the -33C temps (which is what it is today here and with the wind chill it feel like -47C... beyond brrrrr!! LOL)

@amy: Oh Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I think I like my weather better!
Thanks.

@See The Light: Thanks.
I can never decide which I think are God's most wonderful creation -- butterflies or jewels on the wing dragonflies. Maybe it is not either/or, but both/and. This photo is a vote for both/and. It's a beautiful creature and an excellent capture.
29 Jan 2008 12:52pm
@Viewfinder: Thanks. They are both beautiful although I think I favor butterflies.
Flippin' gorgeous!

@MontereyJohn: Thanks.
Very nice capture, great colors and I like the light shining on his left wing. Well done!

@Ina: Thanks.
Delightful detail on this little guy! The green and blue is quite cheerful. I understand you not feeling inspired - we are in a bit of a muck of weather here also - so pinhole shots are sorta out of reach - considering i think i would have to expose the film for about 30 minutes on an overcast day, possibly longer. Although that could prove to also be interesting.
29 Jan 2008 3:41pm
@Rabbit: Thanks.
30 minute exposures would be tough on days like these.
Great catch!Very well done!

@shahab: Thanks.
OMG I am so with you Laurie!!! The weather has just been so blah that I have been in a funk...nothing to shoot or the light is bad!!! I have a new camera which inspired me some, but still the nature shots are not exciting at all...no chance of snow here to bring a little spark. This weekend is a bridal show my sister and I are going to...hopefully that will bring some inspiration (my sister is getting married in November). My next option is to take a trip to the botanical gardens but I can't make it for another two weeks...or to just get out of town...I'm thinking President's Day weekend a trip to Savannah might be a good pick me up! : ) Take care and I hope inspiration finds you or at least you get enough snow to make it interesting!! BTW...this is a great shot...the details, lighting and colors are just fabulous!!
29 Jan 2008 3:52pm
@Jen: Thanks.
Good luck with the new camera!
We finally got some good snow today.
very nice like the colors bravo.....

@marc: Thanks.
I love the detail on this dragonfly ! super shot

@From My Perspective: Thanks.
It was such a shock to see a 'summer' photo!
Those colours and the detail in the drangonfly's wings are beautiful.
I know what you mean about getting tired of the winter!......'street' photography is worth a try if you have a decent sized city within reach as its less dependent on good light. Also I've been doing a lot of tripod mounted night photography this winter which is a huge amount of fun.

@Ian Bramham: Thanks.
wow! lovely play of colors and light!

@ankush vimawala: Thanks.
Splendid capture!

@badala: Thanks.
Love your macro shot. I need a burst of color today too. We are in for another week of rain and blah weather. Gray day after day is not photographically inspiring....
29 Jan 2008 7:31pm
@photowannabe: Thanks. Today we finally got a decent snowstorm. So if it doesn't wash away as it changes to rain on top of the 5 or 6 inches we got, I should be able to get some nice landscapes tomorrow. I took a few in the yard today.
Ooooooooooooooo! this is Stunning, with a capital S! these are my favourite insects. I'm over the moon with delight at seeing this today :) Thank you Laurie, you've made my day.

@MaryB: Thanks. I've always thought they were pretty amazing too.
Great macro shot.!

@theys: Thanks.
great shot. you're right, we do need more color, speaking of which nice color in this shot. like the detail in the wings.

@danthro: Thanks.
Beautiful catch!

@Reza: Thanks.
Oh this is wonderful! Love the details! Excellent!

@martie: Thanks.
This is one of the best dragonfly images I have seen. Beautiful colors and detail, excellent clarity. Nice DOF on the greenery. I can understand the winter blahs that can take away from inspiring thoughts for images. Find something new to discover. I like Ian's suggestion. Keep on clicking.

@Barbara: Thanks.
I've actually done some photojournalism recently and done some large assignments. Unfortunately I cannot share them on my blogs. I did post some rally photos a couple weeks ago on my other blog.
This is a lovely shot and a fantastic capture! It certainly is a welcomed break from the 'gray' shots I have been seeing lately.

An exceptionally good image where contrast is the main attraction. The subtle lighting on the subject is sublime. *stands and ovates#*
