Russell in Concert

This is another photo of Russell. This time it was taken during an NJIO concert in Summit NJ on Jan. 13. For anyone that might not recognize the instrument he is playing it is a bassoon.

There was another NJIO concert Saturday night. This is Russell's last season with the NJIO, since he will be entereing college in the Fall and will not be able to participate. He's been playing with the NJIO along with his brother Jon since 2003. The NJIO has been a great experience for him. Among other things it gave him the opportunity to play with some pretty amazing talent including playing on stage at Kean University performing the bassoon part in the Schleptet and Fuga Meshuga in May of 2005 at the tender age of 14 under the direction of Peter Schickele of P.D.Q Bach fame.

@Rags: Thanks. Yes it has a very warm and rich sound when played right.

When he first started we affectionately called it "Mad Cow" or "Moose-a-ma-phone". I am happy to report he has indeed tamed the beast!

@ManuelaR: Thanks. Russell's bassoon was overhauled a few months ago which keeps it nice and shiny. It's an older instrument but it has been very well maintained.

This looks three dimensional due to the shallow depth of field setting off your subject from the background. Excellent composition and exposure, too. A great musical portrait, then.

I really like this photo! You managed to get Russell and his bassoon in focus, leaving the rest of the musicians a bit blurred, which causes the viewer to focus on Russell and to know that he is playing with others. Very, very nice.
What a fabulous experience for your sons. These real life experiences are so important for young people.

@Melanie: Thanks...I was actually on the stage when I shot this. It was shot during their warm up before the concert. I've been doing the photography for the orchestra for the past couple of years. I usually go up on the stage and try to get some good shots of the members that I would not be able to get from either the house floor or balcony during the concerts. The woodwind section is toward the back behind the strings and in front of the brass section. So I really have to go up on the stage to get them.
