Wind Farm

@Doug: Thanks...The blades were indeed moving. They are so very massive that they move very slowly compared to what I thought they would. The tops also rotate to be correctly positioned to catch the wind. There were actually about five of those huger turbines on this "farm".

@Suby: Thanks Suby, They are birds. I didn't clone them out since in the full sized print you can clearly see they are birds. I only resize after I process a photo so they are just small JPG versions of the print.

@micki: Thanks...I am too and given the amount of damage to the environment, and our health by fossil fuel plants, I think that this cannot do anything but help. The overall impact is far less than fossil plants.

@david: Personally I think the benefits outweigh the negatives. I didn't hear any noise at all from this Wind Farm. My family, husband, father, and 2 brothers all worked or still work for an electric utility, not this one, and the other stations (except for the nuclear plant where 2 of them work) are defeanning. Fossil plants are extremely loud since they run a lot of jet turbines and steam turbines. Not to mention the pollution. (My husband worked in environmental, testing water and later smoke stack emissions). The pollution from the wind farms are nil.

I also cannot understand how the birds get killes since those blades turn so slowly. I'd say pollution from fossil is a far greater problem. Unfortunately, many people use those reasons as an excuse to stop them, when in reality it's just because they may spoil their views. This was the case off of Cape Cod where some high powered politicians have their "compounds". Some of the same politicians that touted this technology a few years ago as a viable alternative...I guess it was ok until it threatened their backyard and priceless views.

@dawn: It's interesting...As I replied to David. My family has been in the elecricity producing industry for a very long time. And I have been to many power plants in my day...alll sorts, double hearing protection is required at fossil plants. Other than nuclear, these plants are extremely quiet when compared to fossil generation plants, and I believe the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Maybe I am used to noise. I live in a NYC suburb and I am in a flight path for Newark Liberty Airport and have a 10 lane highway 3 blocks from me but I heard virtually no noise from this plant and I was as close as I could legally get without tresspassing.

@seventhray: It's funny, but when I was in school in the 1970's the environmental movement, which was admittedly in its infancy, literally screamed that these were the way to go, funny how the tune has changed.

@Craiger: Lol...thanks. I've fought for a few causes in my day. Strange but I would have thought people would embrace this altenative energy source. I mean what's next? Attack solar panels for making the atmosphere warmer by absorbing too much heat? Maybe the reflections from them will damage the retinas of birds. Sometimes I wonder if there is any energy source that won't be opposed. I for one am glad there are alternatives being developed and explored. Hopefully technology will continue to improve so I will be able to continue using my computer and all these other high tech gadgets that contribute greatly to our increased demand on electricity. In the meantime, we just have to use what technology we have, so given the choice between building a fossil plant or a wind farm or a nuclear plant, I think the wind farms are the lesser of the evils.
