Weathered Wood

I wasn't sure what to make of this when I shot it. At first when I saw it laying on the beach I thought it was just the trunk of a tree fallen there. Upon closer inspection I noticed some rusted spikes protruding from it in a fairly uniform pattern. I have no idea what it was or how it got there but I found it's tones interesting.

I will probably start only posting here every other day. I have 2 photoblogs and only post to the other one about once every 2 days, so it would be difficult to do a daily post here, so I will probably post between the two on alternating days. I want to use this one primarily for experimentations in light, composition etc.

lol I don't really know what to make of this, except it has good composition and perfect exposure. None of the details are compromised in the shades or highlights, except in the background. It's good you perceive it as abstract because I wouldn't know how else to categorize this one either.

@Kelvin Chan: Thanks...This type of shot is always about exerimentation for me, playing with settings etc. the shadow and light areas were very contrasty since the sun was low and about ready to set, which caused dramatic shadows and highlight areas. One thing I really Love about digital is that experiments like this one only cost some space on the hard drive. Since sensors react to light differenty than film, I've been doing a lot of experiments to push the camera and see how I can maximize the results...but this also means taking pictures of some very unusual things that I may not have if I was stil shooting with film.

well i like it composition wise,
not too sure about the tones,maybe a little brighter would be good,
a smaller aperture to get all of it in focus maybe?

@shiv: Thanks..The DOF was intentinal...when I do shots like this it's always about playing. In this case I wanted a shallow DOF. I didn't want the grass in focus behind the "log" and I wanted the focus to gradually fade as the eye travelled away from it. This was also about the play of deep shadow and highlights. The sun was low and setting and there were heavy shadows. If you notice the shadow areas are very strong and the highlight areas are just this side of blown.

I like the composition of this shot and you picked the texture up really well. This shot was perfect for B&W to keep it more abstract.

@Doug: Thanks...I don't post a lot of abstract shots, but I though this was pretty interesting.

Sometimes I do wonder what exectly makes photo qualify as abstract.

The contrast in this photo is amazing. Very good decision on your part turning the photo into black & white. The level of detail in the photo is extremely fine, the spikes, and texture of the log. The composition and framing truly make this an abstract photograph.
Keep experimenting!

@Dan: Thanks...As I said to Doug, I don't often post abstract and I wonder what exactly makes a photo qualify as abstract.

Experimenting is a lot of fun. It is interesting to see the way that digital differs in it's response to light than film. It seems to be easier to lose detail in the extremes of an exposure. Digital has a harder time dealing with contrasty compositions than film, at least it seems to me.
