NJ Lighthouse Challenge 2006-The Twins

Posted by Laurie (New Jersey, United States) on 19 November 2006 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The Twin Lights of Navesink are located 200 feet above sea level in Highlands NJ overlooking the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, the New York Skyline, and the Atlantic Ocean.

They were commissioned in 1828 and operated as the primary lighthouse for New York Harbor. The current lighthouse was built in 1862 to replace the previous lights which had begun to deteriorate.

As you can see they aren't exactly twins. One tower is octagonal and the other is square. They are connected by a long large structure that resembles a fort, almost castle like, structure. I have posted pictures of the Twins before, so I tried a little different perspective than last time. It is one of the most interesting lighthouses I've ever seen.

I post the same photos here as on Capturethisphotography.com but they are higher res. and landscape orientation shots are larger size.
