NJ Lighthouse Challenge 2006-Old Barney

Posted by Laurie (New Jersey, United States) on 17 November 2006 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Old Barney is located in the North end of Long Beach Island at the entrance to Barnegat Bay. At 165 feet tall it is the second tallest lighthouse in NJ. It was built to replace another smaller lighthouse that was deemed inadequate and was also threatened by the ever-encroaching sea. A temporary wooden lighthouse was erected while the new one was built and the original fell into the sea. It was commissioned into service on January 1, 1859 and remained in service as a first-class navigational aid until August 1927 when a Lightship was anchored 8 miles off the coast. Old Barney’s light was reduced by 80% but was not extinguished until January 1944. The lightship became obsolete when it was replaced by electronic navigation in 1966.

Old Barney was closed in 1988 for repairs and renovations. It was re-opened for visitors in 1991. Erosion is a constant battle for the lighthouse and improvements seem to be a never-ending struggle. The tower is a popular spot and is lit up at night with floodlights, which is just beautiful to see.

Those who know Long Beach Island know just how beautiful it is there. We have vacationed there many times over the years. It is just a wonderful place.

I have posted pictures of Old Barney before. One of my favorite shots was taken this past summer when my son Rob was home to visit. It was a night shot which you can see by clicking here.
